Charlie’s Marathon Mission

As many of our supporters may know, 2010 athlete Charlie Maher has been training hard for his third marathon – the Gold Coast Marathon in July. Charlie was a member of the very first IMP team in 2010, and was the first Indigenous Australian ever to cross the finish line of the New York Marathon. As well as training hard seven days a week in the lead-up to Gold Coast, Charlie has also been fundraising for IMP, and is getting close to his target of $2000. Charlie will be running the marathon for his wife Talitha and daughter Frankie. All funds raised will go towards assisting IMP to find champions and create role models that inspire Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to live a healthy lifestyle and decrease instances of preventable disease. IMP men conquer Canberra

The six male members of the 2013 Indigenous Marathon Project squad have returned home following their first official training camp in Canberra. The five day camp saw the squad learn more about the gruelling training they will undertake over the next six months to prepare them for the New York Marathon, as well as undertake units of their Certificate IV in Health and Leisure. The men also took part in a 16km time trial around Lake Burley Griffin that not only put their physical strength to the test, but pushed them emotionally. Murray Bridge based athlete Luke McKenzie said the five day camp had completely changed his outlook. “This camp has definitely changed me for the better,” he said. “I have met the most amazing bunch of people over the past five days, and I can’t wait to get home and get stuck into my training.” The men will now return home to continue with their training before coming together with the rest of the squad on the Gold Coast in early July for the Gold Coast half-marathon.

Do you want to join the six male members of the IMP squad as they running a gruelling 16km time trial around Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra this weekend? Here is your chance! We would love as many of our volunteers and supporters as possible to join the men as they take on what is for many, the furthest they have ever run. If putting on your running shoes on a Sunday morning to run 16km isn’t appealing, you can still be involved. The men will be leaving the Black Mountain Peninsula at 9am, and running in a clockwise direction around the 16km loop, finishing back at the car park between 10-10.30am, so you can meet them on the course and show your support. The men arrived in Canberra on Wednesday, ahead of their first training camp as members of Rob de Castella’s Indigenous Marathon Project. Following the success of the women’s camp last week, Luke McKenzie from Murray Bridge, Tali Tabuai from Saibai Island, Jack Wilson from Townsville, Nathan Djerrkura from Yirrkala, Justin Miller from Katherine and Colin Sampton from Yulara will finish the camp one step closer to running the world famous New York Marathon in November. The five day camp will include a number of training runs in the icy Canberra mornings as well as starting units of their Certificate IV in Health and Leisure. 23 years old Colin Sampton, who is currently living in Uluru and studying at the National Indigenous Training Academy, said he was looking forward to his first trip to Canberra, but was unsure what to expect. “I am feeling pumped up for the camp, and ready to be put through my paces,” he said. “My training is going great so far, and I can’t wait to step up my training as it gives me so much motivation to inspire others. The men will return home on Monday morning, and will come together again for the Gold Coast half-marathon in July. The team will be available for media opportunities throughout the week, as well as at the conclusion of their run on Sunday morning. Indigenous women shine in Canberra

The six female members of the 2013 Indigenous Marathon Project squad have returned home after a successful first camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra. Lisa Bloxsome from Nowra, Evelyna Dhamarrandji from Elcho Island, Georgia Gleeson from Queanbeyan, Elise Hull from Bathurst, Charmaine Patrick from Hermannsburg and Carla Snow from Newcastle were put to the test both on the running track and in the classroom, as they learnt more about their training and started elements of their Certificate IV in Health and Leisure. The girls also took part in the annual Mother’s Day Classic 10km race around Lake Burley Griffin, which for many of the girls, was the furthest they had ever run, and their first time at an organised running event. The girls have now returned home where they will continue their training in the lead-up to their next camp on the Gold Coast in July, where they will also tackle the challenging Gold Coast half-marathon. The six members of the men’s squad will arrive in Canberra next week.

Ready, Set, Go at Amoonguna

Last Wednesday saw the much anticipated opening of Rob de Castella’s SmartStart for Kids Amoonguna Fitness Trail. The 460 metre track built around the school in the small Indigenous community of Amoonguna, just outside Alice Springs, contains a number of fitness stations including monkey bars, sit up benches and hurdles. The running track and fitness stations were designed to help develop the children’s functional strength, respiratory fitness, balance, coordination and most importantly to encourage physical activity. The launch of the track ran alongside a community and family fun day, with children and community members taking part in a number of activities throughout the day. Indigenous Marathon Project past athletes Charlie Maher, Caleb Hart and Reggie Smith joined in to help run the activities, and share stories from their marathon journey. It is hoped that similar tracks will be built in a number of Indigenous communities throughout the country to encourage physical activity and healthy lifestyles.

20 years old from Townsville. Jack tried out for IMP because he believes there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and wanted a goal to focus on. He wants to be a strong Indigenous role model in his community, and to gain a better understating of the health issues affecting the people in his community. Jack has always had a passion for running, and was a talented cross country runner while at school. He also played NRL, but injured his shoulder, and now runs every day. Jack is an apprentice carpenter.

Indigenous Marathon Project athlete safe in Boston

Indigenous Marathon Project athlete Emma Cameron has been reunited with IMP staff members following a series of bomb blasts at the finish line of today’s Boston Marathon. The Darwin based athlete was roughly one mile from the site of the blasts, which occurred at around 3pm Boston time. She was evacuated from the course at the 41km mark, and was reunited with IMP founder and former Boston Marathon winner Rob de Castella, and coach Tim Rowe shortly after. De Castella said he and Rowe were at the nearby race hotel when they heard the explosions and had realised that something serious had happened. “There was obviously a fair bit of chaos and pandemonium at the finish line, but we knew that Emma was still quite some distance from the finish, and that she would be safe out on the course,” he said. “Emma should be extremely proud of what she has achieved today, and she is a marathon runner on our eyes. At the same time, our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone touched by this terrible tragedy.” Despite not being able to finish the final 1.195km of the marathon course, Emma becomes the 21^st IMP athlete to conquer a marathon, since the Project’s inception in 2010. Cameron was selected as part of the 2012 IMP team, but sustained a knee injury in the lead-up to the New York Marathon in November last year. After recovering, she continued her preparation for the Boston Marathon. The team will depart Boston on Tuesday evening and will be available for media interviews when they arrive back in Sydney on Thursday morning. Indigenous athlete to realise marathon dreams in Boston

After 12 months of gruelling training, Darwin athlete Emma Cameron will finally realise her marathon dreams when she lines up at the start of the Boston Marathon on Monday morning. Cameron, who was selected as part of the 2012 Indigenous Marathon Project squad alongside 11 other athletes, began her marathon journey last April, but sustained a knee injury in the lead-up to the 30km test run in September last year that ruled her out of the New York Marathon. Despite the setback, Emma showed courage and determination to continue her training through the hot Darwin summer, finishing a 30km test event in Canberra in February, and earning herself a place on the start line of the world’s oldest marathon alongside 25,000 other competitors. IMP founder and former Boston Marathon winner Rob de Castella said that Emma’s courage and determination had been highlighted by the fact that she hadn’t let an injury slow her down. “Emma’s journey to Boston hasn’t been an easy one, and she has had many obstacles to overcome, including watching her teammates travel to New York, and run the marathon in Tokyo,” he said. “Like the IMP runners before her, Emma’s involvement with IMP has changed her life, and along the way, she has inspired thousands of Indigenous Australia’s to be more physically active and live a healthier lifestyle, and that is exactly what we set out to achieve,” During her involvement with IMP, Emma has successfully completed her Certificate IV in Health and Leisure, and has been instrumental in organising a number of community events in Darwin to raise awareness of living a healthy lifestyle and taking part in physical activity. Emma, along with Rob and IMP coach Tim Rowe, will depart Sydney for Boston tomorrow morning, before the marathon on Monday morning. Georgia Gleeson

30 years old from Queanbeyan Georgia is Aboriginal. Georgia has struggled throughout her life with Bipolar. She has consulted numerous doctors who have all provided her with medication of which have severe side effects. From years of trial and error sorting out what medication works best for her, she has found that regular physical activity is by far the best form of therapy to control her moods. She knows she has to run at least 5 times a week Georgia wanted to be part of IMP to show people that they are capable to changing their lives, and they don’t have to feel helpless. She wants to pass on the positive message of living a healthy life to her family and community, especially young females. Georgia is studying a Certificate IV in Fitness, which she hopes will help her to work in her community in a health and fitness role.

Carla Snow

23 years old from Newcastle Carla is Aboriginal from the Craig-Gumbanggir clan. She grew up in Coffs Harbour, before moving to Newcastle for University, and is the second IMP team member from Newcastle, following in the footsteps of 2012 athlete Nat Heath. Carla lives in a low socio-economic area in Newcastle. There are a lot of kids roaming around with no drive, and she wants to change their outlook on life, and their perception in community. She is already a big role-model in Newcastle. She coaches an under 21, mostly Indigenous, touch football team and is a state touch football representative. Carla wants to challenge herself mentally and physically and inspire her community, as well as the students that she teaches, and show the younger generation the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. Carla moved to Newcastle for University, and took up running because she found it helped control her anxiety issues. She works as a Physical Education teacher.

Charmaine Patrick

28 years old from Hermannsburg Charmaine is Aboriginal from Hermannsburg, and has lived in the community her whole life. She is the first IMP athlete from Hermannsburg, and is helping to strengthen the IMP connection in Central Australia, following the participation of athletes from Alice Springs in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Charmaine wants to run and be healthy and to also stand up for her community and show other single mums that if she can do it, they can do it to. She wants to be a role model and stop smoking, try IMP and try running. She also wants to be part of IMP to encourage and inspire others, and show them that there is more to life. Charmaine is a mother to two young children, and took up running when she heard about the IMP tryouts. She now runs 4km three times week. She works full-time at the MacDonnell Shire Council in Hermannsburg.

Elise Hull

24 years old from Bathurst Elise is Aboriginal from Adnyamathanha/Arabana. Elise wanted to be involved in IMP because she wants to do something for herself. She also wants to inspire her family and community to be active. Elise took-up running 12 months ago, and is aiming to do a fun run every month. Elise is actively involved with Charles Sturt University in Bathurst, and works to connect elders with the rest of the community. On top of that, she is also studying a Bachelor of Arts, and is a mother to a four year old daughter. Elise had often thought about applying to be part of IMP in the past, but wanted to wait until she had built up a good support network for her young daughter. She now believes she is ready to chase her dream.

Evelyna Dhamarrandji

23 years old from Galiwinku, Elcho Island Evelyna is Aboriginal, from the Djambarrpuyngu clan. She is the first IMP athlete from Elcho Island, and has lived in the community of Galiwinku her whole life. She wants to be part of IMP to represent her community and to try something different. She wants to show other women her age in her community that she can run a marathon, and to be a good role model. Evelyna is the head of her local church group and helps young people in the community with employment. She has previously been nominated for the Northern Territory Young Achiever Award. She has represented the Northern Territory in track running, AFL and touch football. Evelyna works full-time at the East Arnhem Shire and is mother to two young children. She has a great support base in the community, including her partner, and other community members.

Lisa Bloxsome

27 years old from Nowra Lisa is Aboriginal from the Wadi Wadi clan. She lives in Nowra and decided to try out for IMP as she wanted to challenge herself and to show her family and friends what she can achieve when given a chance, as well as showing her community what she can achieve. Lisa wants to show the younger generation in Nowra that there is more to life, and that you can achieve anything that you set your mind to. Lisa is studying a Certificate IV in fitness, and helps with a women’s group in Nowra, taking fitness classes.

Tali Tabuai

24 years old from Saibai Island Tali wanted to try out for IMP to try something different and wants to shine in a different sporting field because everyone plays the same sports in Cairns. He was inspired by his brother Jurgean, who ran for IMP in 2012, and wants to show people that if Jurgean can do it, so can he. He wants to spread the message in the Torres Strait that you can choose to do something different and still succeed. Tali plays AFL and NRL, training twice a week and playing games on the weekend. He runs three times each week. He finished grade 12 and was school captain in high school. He has travelled to Canberra for a ‘Dare to Dream’ program. He loves what IMP is about and is keen to get some more people from Saibai Islands to try out for IMP next year.

Colin Sampton

23 years old from Cairns Colin is Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander from Badu Island. Since taking up running 12 months ago, Colin has lost 30kg, and is now in love with the sport. He now wants to become a long distance runner, and his passion for running was inspired by the 2012 London Olympics. He also wants to use running to stay healthy and continue to lose weight, while motivating his family and showing them what he can achieve. Colin spent his whole life in Cairns, before recently taking up a traineeship with the National Indigenous Training Academy at Yulara in central Australia, which will give him a Certificate II in Hospitality.

Justin Miller

25 years old from Katherine Justin is Aboriginal from Ramburrunga Trip Arnhem Land Justin moved around a lot growing up and raised himself from a young age. He has lived in Katherine for the past seven years. He now raises seven children, a number of which are foster children, with his partner, and wants to teach them the right way to live, and ensure that they are the opportunities that he didn’t have. Justin wanted to be involved in IMP to help make a positive change in Katherine, as well as in wider Indigenous Australia. He also wants to inspire his children and show them that they can achieve anything in life. Justin runs a program in Katherine called Strongbalas – an Indigenous men’s health program that supports men through a variety of issues including homelessness, crime rehabilitation and health education.

Luke McKenzie

27 years old from Murray Bridge Luke is Aboriginal, and lives in Murray Bridge. Luke has been integral in helping IMP develop a strong relationship with the Murray Bridge community through the Deadly Fun Run Series, and wants to show young people in the community that if you work hard, you can achieve anything. Luke was diagnosed with leukaemia at age 11, and wasn’t expected to recover. After spending years in a hospital room, he then started his life from scratch, and has since played basketball at an A Grade level, as well as recently losing 12kg. Luke wanted to be part of IMP because he believes in promoting healthy lifestyles and has always wanted to see someone from Murray Bridge involved in the Project. Luke loves to see what can be achieved when you put your mind to it. Luke works full-time in Indigenous employment.

Nathan Djerrkura

24 years old from Yirrkala, NT Nathan is Aboriginal from the Wangurri clan. He grew up in Yirrkala, before moving to Victoria to pursue his passion for AFL, playing for both Geelong and the Western Bulldogs for six years. He recently moved back to Yirrkala to be closer to his family and now works full-time as a youth worker for the East Arnhem Shire Council organising different activities and encouraging young people in the community to achieve their best. Nathan wants to continue to build on the impact that past IMP squad members Jamie Wunungmurra (Boston 2012) and Arian Pearson (New York 2011) have had in Yirrkala. He has a strong interest in sport and recreation and wants to promote the importance of a healthy lifestyle to the people in his community.

Indigenous runners selected to inspire in New York Marathon Tuesday 9^th April, 2013 A squad of 12 inspirational athletes has been selected to tackle the 2013 New York Marathon as part of the Indigenous Marathon Project. The team is: Men Nathan Djerrkura Luke McKenzie Justin Miller Nathan Roberts Colin Sampton Tali Tabuai Women Lisa Bloxsome Evelyna Dhamarrandji Georgia Gleeson Elise Hull Charmaine Patrick Carla Snow The Project, that saw in excess of 100 applications from every corner of the country, annually selects, trains, educates and takes a group of outstanding Indigenous Australians to compete alongside 47,000 other competitors at the world’s biggest marathon. IMP is now in its fourth year and has seen 20 Indigenous athletes cross the finish line of a number of major international marathons, including New York, Boston and Tokyo. Stories of hardship, courage and determination filled this year’s squad, and will help the group of athletes as they tackle nine months of gruelling training, and what will no doubt be the one of the biggest challenges of their lives – running a marathon. Project Director and former World Champion marathon runner Rob de Castella said to see the high standard of applicants this year not only made it hard to select a squad, but highlighted the powerful message that was being sent to Indigenous Australia. “The word is starting to get out about how important exercise and leading a healthy lifestyle is, and that’s what we have wanted to achieve right from day one,” he said. “So far, we have seen 20 inspirational runners finish a marathon through IMP, and they have gone on to achieve some truly amazing things. I have no doubt that these next 12 athletes to come through the Project will continue to do the same.” De Castella said the 2013 squad represented an amazing cross-section of Indigenous Australia, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island athletes from major cities, regional centres and remote communities. “We have athletes of different ages, different backgrounds and who have had a range of different life experiences,” he said. “To see such a broad representation of Indigenous Australia is absolutely what this Project is about, and that’s what we hope to build on in the future.” The squad will meet for the first time when they come together in Canberra in May for their first training camp, which will not only include a number of training sessions, but will see athletes start units of their Certificate IV in Health and Leisure, that will assist with employment in health related fields. Athletes will be pushed to their limits throughout the year to achieve more than they ever thought they could, including camps and running events in the Gold Coast, Sydney and Alice Springs. The final team to travel to New York in November will be announced following a 30km time trial in Alice Springs in September.

IMP finds raw talent right across the country

From Sydney to Karratha, Adelaide to Tiwi Islands, and Melbourne to Darwin the Indigenous Marathon Project has wrapped up another successful national try out tour. Visiting 14 different locations over the 12 day tour, IMP staff met close to 100 applicants, all with dreams of running the world famous New York Marathon under the guidance of World Champions marathon runner Rob de Castella. Applicants were put through their paces over a 3km and 5km distance, as well as undertaking interview as to why they thought they should be part of IMP 2013. IMP coach Tim Rowe said the amount of raw talent that was discovered across the country was truly inspirational “We met some really amazing individuals over the 12 days, who not only want to make a difference to their own lives, but who want to help shape Indigenous Australia into the future,” he said. “It’s really exciting to see the quality number and quality of applicants improve each year, and it is a true testament to the hard work of these individuals, and their willingness to make a difference.” The final squad will be announced after Easter, ahead of their first training camps in Canberra in May. The Indigenous Marathon Project (IMP) national tryout tour is coming to a city or town near you this March! Come along and meet the IMP team and give yourself a chance of being part of something great – the 2013 IMP New York Marathon squad. You don’t have to have any running experience – we are just looking for outstanding young Indigenous men and women aged 18-30 who want to run the New York Marathon, sweat out nine months of training under the watchful eye of former World Champion marathon runner Rob de Castella, and inspire other Indigenous people to lead a healthy life. Three Indigenous Marathon Project athletes have run the race of their lives to do their families, friends, communities and most of all, themselves proud, crossing the finish line of the world-famous Tokyo Marathon. Korey Summers from Alice Springs, Nat Heat from Newcastle and Jurgean Tabuai from Saibai Island were selected as part of the 2012 IMP New York Marathon squad in April last year, but put their marathon dreams on hold following the cancellation of the New York Marathon last year. Yesterday the trio stood tall alongside 35,000 other competitors on the start line of one of the world’s most prestigious marathons and showed the world that if you put your mind to it, you can achieve anything. Despite testing conditions, with temperatures reaching a low of -2 degrees the night before the race, the athletes put their hard work and training into practice with Korey leading the pack over the finish line, and setting an IMP record of 3.08.51 for the 42.195km course. Nat was the second IMP athlete over the line in 3.14.51, with Jurgean close behind in 3.27.50. The trio will now return to Australia for a well-earned break, before being presented with their Certificate IV in Health and Leisure. Emma faces next challenge on the long road to Boston

Darwin athlete Emma Cameron will face the biggest challenge of her running life on Sunday when she lines up at the start of the gruelling 30km event at the Stromlo Running Festival in Canberra. The 30 year old athlete was selected as part of the Indigenous Marathon Project’s (IMP) 2012 New York Marathon squad in April last year, but sustained a knee injury that prevented her from running the 30km test event in Alice Springs in September. Instead, Emma will tackle the Boston Marathon in April if she can successfully finish the 30km on Sunday. Emma, who also plays netball for the Northern Territory, said she had never thought about training for and running a marathon before trying out for IMP.” “I tried out for IMP because I wanted to represent my people, my family and my friends, and rather than telling them what they should be doing I wanted to lead by example and show them that anything is possible,” she said. “I have been very fortunate to be a part of the IMP family and training with such an amazing bunch of people has been a once in a lifetime experience. I know Boston is going to be one of the biggest challenges I have faced, but I am excited to get there.” IMP Founder and World Champion marathon runner Rob de Castella said that Emma’s natural courage and determination had been highlighted by the fact that she hadn’t let an injury destroy her marathon dream. “The face that Emma kept training while her team mates went to New York, and now Tokyo is a testament to her training and commitment, and those are qualities that we try and bring out in all our runners,” he said. “Boston will be a huge challenge for Emma, but life for her will begin when she crosses the finish line and realises that if she puts her mind to it, she really can achieve anything that she wants in life.” Following the 30km test, Emma will return to Darwin where she will continue her training before travelling to Boston for the Marathon on April 15^th. The Indigenous Marathon Project is not a sports program, but a social change program that uses the simple act of running as a vehicle to promote the benefits of an active and healthy lifestyle.

Tiwi Islands kick-off Deadly Fun Run Series

The Tiwi Island community of Milikapiti kicked-off their 2013 Deadly Fun Run campaign on Friday, with 32 of the Island’s children taking part in the 3km and 5km events. Community members, who were responsible for creating the Tiwi Road Runners Club, will host a fun run each Friday afternoon leading into the Indigenous Marathon Project’s Deadly Fun Run Championships to be held at Uluru in July, where the community will send its top male and female, junior and senior runners to compete against other communities. The Deadly Fun Run Series is an IMP initiative that introduces running and walking to remote communities in a fun, non-intimidating environment for Indigenous men, women and children.

Donors rally to send IMP runners to Tokyo

After a month of uncertainty following the dramatic last-minute cancellation of the New York Marathon, the 2012 Indigenous Marathon Project (IMP) squad’s marathon dreams are still well and truly alive, with their sights now firmly set on running the world famous Tokyo Marathon. Thanks to a number of extremely generous donations, the team will prove that nothing can keep them down when they line up together at the start of one of the world’s biggest marathons on February 24^th. IMP founder Rob de Castella said that the team had worked hard and deserved the chance to run an international marathon, and that the opportunity presented to the runners demonstrated that despite the many setbacks that they had faced, they could still go onto achieve their marathon goals. “These amazing young men and women are truly an inspirational bunch, and learning to cope with the decision to cancel New York and head home to continue their training has been tougher than any marathon that they will ever run,” he said. “The way they have stuck together as a team, gone back to their respective communities, put their heads down and continued with their training in some really tough, hot conditions in the middle of summer is a credit to every single team member. Everyone will have undertaken a marathon effort simply to get to the start line in Tokyo, and that is what IMP is all about.” 29 year old Justin Gaykamangu, from one of Australia’s most remote communities – Ramingining in Arhnem Land – couldn’t contain his excitement when his mentor Andrew broke the news that he was being given another chance to travel overseas and run a marathon. “I am so excited. I have heard that Tokyo is big like New York, and it will be my first time there. It is going to be great, and I am so proud to be given this opportunity,” he said. “When I returned home from New York, everyone was really upset for me as they had heard the news and they were expecting to see me on TV. I now have even more motivation to keep training hard, especially in the heat.” Alice Springs athlete Korey Summers, who is hoping to be the first IMP athlete to break the elusive 3 hour mark for the marathon, said he was pretty disappointed when he found out that the New York Marathon wouldn’t go ahead. “It was devastating when we found out that we couldn’t compete in New York, but we got to help out and volunteer in affected areas, which was more important at that time”, he said. “When I heard that we had been given the chance to run in Tokyo, I was pretty excited. It will be great to do a marathon of that scale in another huge city in another part of the world, and I am really looking forward to getting a marathon under my belt.” The team will arrive in Tokyo on Friday 22^nd February for the marathon on the Sunday morning. 31 years old from Darwin Emma decided to try out for the Project to encourage others and show how running, and sport in general can increase confidence, especially for Indigenous women. She wants to be a role model for the next generation, and to make people around her proud to be Indigenous. Emma is a keen sportswoman, and has been involved in netball from a young age, representing the Northern Territory. Emma has been heavily involved in fundraising for the Project, and has raised close to $2000 through her community. Emma suffered a knee injury prior to the 30km time trial in Alice Springs in September, and is training hard for the Boston Marathon in April, 2013, after finishing a 30km run in Canberra in February.

IMP athletes arrive back on Australian soil

A tired but enthusiastic Indigenous Marathon Project team have arrived back in Australia after a tumultuous week in New York.

While the team didn’t board the plane in New York as marathon runners like they had hoped, following the cancellation of the New York Marathon, they have instead learnt many lessons about tackling the challenges that life delivers.

Instead of covering the 42.195km marathon course on Sunday morning, the team put on their race bibs and helped with a marathon effort of a different kind – helping to clean-up New York.

Squad member Grace Eather, whose remote community of Maningrida was damaged by cyclone Monica in 2006 said she was disappointed that she didn’t get the chance to run the marathon, but seeing the damage in New York first-hand had made her understand why it was cancelled.

“Instead of running the marathon, we spent the day in Brooklyn helping out at churches and community centres to get supplies to affected areas,” she said.

“Seeing families’ devastation from the aftermath of flooding from the hurricane made me understand more why it had to be cancelled, and I am just grateful to be able to spend time in this incredible city and help people in need.”

Squad member Nat Heath said that although the team didn’t get the chance to run the marathon that they had trained so hard for, they had all learnt a great deal by helping with the clean-up process.

“Keeping the marathon was something that was meant to bring the city together, but in this case all it was doing was dividing the city, and that isn’t the idea behind the New York Marathon,’’ he said.

“To spend the day helping locals instead of running was a rewarding experience and it was something that bought the whole team together and showed us what is really important.”

Understandably, the cancellation of the marathon has been a significant expense to IMP, and as a small charity, IMP simply does not have the funds to take the team to another international marathon, and will instead concentrate on raising the necessary funds to send the team to an Australian marathon in the near future.

IMP athletes to help New York recover

While Indigenous Marathon athletes preparing for the New York Marathon are understandably devastated with the news that the marathon has been cancelled, they will remain in New York to help the city get back on its feet.

The eight members of Rob de Castella’s Indigenous Marathon Project arrived in New York yesterday ahead of the marathon on Sunday, only to find out today that the marathon has been cancelled.

De Castella said that while the decision not to go ahead with the marathon had been gutting for the team, they were in good spirits.

“This is a decision that we need to deal with, and that is what IMP is all about. These are the experiences that help our young Indigenous men and women grow and become inspirational leaders and agents of positive change,” he said.

“Sometime it is some of the hardest things in life that teach us the most and enable us to grow and be better people.”

The team will remain in New York until Tuesday, as originally planned, and are working with the Australian consulate to organise a number of volunteer opportunities to help with the clean-up process.

“The situation in New York is absolutely devastating and far worse than anything we had imagined, with thousands of people still without shelter, food, water and power,” de Castella said.

“Our team is in good spirits and they are all looking after each other. The love and support that we have received from the Australian public and people across the world has been amazing, and will help ensure that we can come back from this set-back.”

While the team won’t get the chance to fulfil their dreams of running the New York Marathon, IMP will ensure that they are given the chance to compete in a marathon in the near future.

IMP athletes set to shine on the world’s biggest stage

In less than a week, the 2012 New York Marathon team will arrive in the world’s biggest city to run the world’s biggest marathon – the New York Marathon!

On Sunday 4^th November, eight inspirational Indigenous Marathon Project athletes will put six months of blood, sweat and tears into practice as they set out to achieve what they never thought possible.

Korey Summers from Alice Springs, Marius Clarke from Gunbalanya, Justin Gaykamangu from Ramingining, Kieren de Santis from Tiwi Islands, Nat Heath from Newcastle, Jurgean Tabuai from Townsville, Grace Eather from Maningrida and Amber Parker from Newcastle will tackle the 42.195km journey alongside 47,000 other athletes, and will be cheered across the finish line by 2.5 million spectators, and 35 million television viewers.

The 42.195km course is considered one of the ultimate physical and mental challenges for any runner and one that will test the minds, bodies and spirits of these eight dedicated athletes – but once they cross the finish line, they will join the elite few who can call themselves a marathon runner.

For 29 year old Justin Gaykamangu, the bustling streets of New York will be a world away from the remote East Arnhem community of Ramingining that he calls home.

“I am feeling tough, and ready to go. I have been training well and thinking a lot about the race,” said Justin.

“When I am running, I imagine the trees are the buildings and that I am running in New York. My plan is to try and get to the finish line in less than three hours by running smart and not hard.”

20 year old Kieren de Santis from the remote community of Milikapiti on the Tiwi Islands never imagined that he would ever travel to the world’s biggest city to run a marathon alongside 47,000 other people.

“I am really excited by the opportunity that I have been given and I am looking forward to representing the Tiwi Islands in New York,” Kieren said.

While the aim in New York will be to get each of the eight athletes across the marathon finish line, IMP director and former World Champion marathon runner Rob de Castella said running the marathon would show the athletes that they can achieve anything.

“Life for these inspirational athletes will begin when they cross the finish line in New York, and when they realise that if they put their minds to it, they can achieve anything that they want in life,” de Castella said.

“Being part of IMP and running a marathon will open many doors, and present many opportunities that will change the lives, not only of these athletes, but of their families, friends and communities back home.”

The athletes will arrive in Sydney on Tuesday 30^th of October, and will undertake more components of their Certificate IV in Health and Leisure, as well as their final training sessions before flying out to New York on Thursday 1^st November for the week long trip.

A big congratulations to 2012 IMP squad member Justin Gaykamangu, who over the weekend ran a great race to finish in second place in the Gove Runners North half-marathon. Although Justin won the under-39 male category in a quick time of 94 minutes, he was pipped at the post by Nhulunbuy runner Neil Holland, who won the event overall.

This was Justin’s final hit-out before the New York Marathon, which is now less than four weeks away!

From remote Australia to the bright lights of New York

As the sun rose over Alice Springs in the early hours of Saturday morning, nine Indigenous athletes from across the country conquered the biggest challenge of their short running careers.

Korey Summers, Nat Heath, Jurgean Tabuai, Kieren De Santis, Justin Gaykamangu, Marius Clarke, Amber Parker and Grace Eather overcame their fears to smash their 30km test event and earn themselves a place on Rob de Castella’s Indigenous Marathon Project team to travel to New York in November.

Nicky Kerindun had the run of her life finishing a 21.1km course (10.1 km further than she had ever run) to make it into the squad for the Boston Marathon in April next year. She will be joined by Emma Cameron, who was injured and unable to run on the weekend.

Project Director Rob de Castella, who has been mentoring the athletes since they were selected into the squad in March, said he was overwhelmed by what the athletes, many from extremely remote parts of the country, had achieved over such as short space of time.

“Many of these guys and girls didn’t even know what a marathon was six months ago, and they never would have believed that they could have run 30km and be on track to run a marathon,” he said.

“To see the looks of complete joy and self-belief on their faces when they crossed the finish line was amazing, and for them to realise that they can in fact achieve anything that they put their minds to is really what this Project is all about.”

21 year old Amber Parker from Cessnock said the 30km event was the hardest thing she had ever done.

“I got to the 25km mark and I hit the wall and felt like I couldn’t keep going, but there was only 5km to go, and my family had driven nearly 3,000 kilometres to support me from the sideline, so I knew I had to make it,” she said.

“I am so excited to be in the team to go to New York, and I am really happy that my new friend Grace (from Maningrida in Arnhem Land) will be coming with me. My Grandmother was one of the stolen generation and IMP has reconnected me with my Aboriginal culture, Grace and I will be friends forever”.

To train for and run a marathon is no easy task no matter where you are from, and for this team, their obstacles have been incomprehensible, with the athletes overcoming isolation and loneliness, oppressive heat and humidity, vicious dogs, crocodiles, buffalos, and injury.

In just five weeks, they will embark on an epic 42.195 km journey through the streets of New York, alongside 48,000 other runners, and in front of two million cheering fans who will line the streets of New York, and more than 35 million television viewers worldwide.

Personal best times all round at the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival

Sunday saw IMP athletes past and present tackle the annual Blackmores Sydney Running Festival, with 2012 New York Marathon finisher Charlie Maher, and 2012 squad member Korey Summers take on the half marathon, and 2011 New York Marathon finisher Nadine Hunt run the 9kmB Bridge Run.

Representing the Northern Territory as part of the Australian half-marathon championships, Korey ran a personal best time over the 21 km course, finishing in 79 minutes, with Charlie also running a personal best in 87 minutes.

Nadine ran a great race in the 9km, finishing in 44 minutes.

The running festival was also the site for the inaugural Indigenous Marathon Project shoe drive. Over the five days leading up to race day, and race day itself, we collected 10 boxes of used an unwanted running shoes, which will now be sent to remote Indigenous communities across Australia.

Shoe drive to help spread the love of running

Do you, like many Australians, have dozens of used an unwanted running shoes lying around at home that you have no idea what to with?

If so, IMP has solved the problem for you!

As part of our goal to make a difference to Indigenous Australia, and spread the joy of running, we have teamed up with Shoes for Planet Earth to get running shoes to Indigenous communities in need, so that everyone has the chance to own a pair of running shoes.

All you need to do is take your shoes to one of the official drop off points listed below, and we will ensure that they get to an Indigenous community that needs them.

Just make sure the shoes are clean, in a matching pair, have no holes, and are in a box or marked labelled Indigenous Marathon Project.

We are working on having more drop off points, but for the time being if you have shoes that you want to donate and can’t get to one of the locations below, please email us at marathon@smartstart.com.au and we will find somewhere for you to drop your shoes.

Korey Summers to represent Northern Territory in half-marathon champs

In another first for the Indigenous Marathon Project, 2012 squad member Korey Summers has been selected to represent the Northern Territory in the Australian half-marathon championships at the Blackmore’s Sydney Running Festival next weekend.

The 22 year old Alice Springs athlete has seen success over the 21 km distance on a number of occasions since being selected in Rob de Castella’s IMP squad earlier this year, including a personal best of 82 minutes at the Gold Coast Running Festival in July, and a win in the ABC Alice Springs half marathon last month.

Korey said he felt extremely proud to be selected to represent the Northern Territory and was looking forward to the race.

“As this is my first ever state team selection, I am even more thrilled,” he said.

“I have lots of confidence now after doing well at the Northern Territory Championships last weekend, so I am hoping to do really well.”

Korey will line up alongside 2010 IMP squad member Charlie Maher, also from Alice Springs, who will race in his first major event since conquering the New York Marathon in 2010 and the Boston Marathon in 2011.

Indigenous Marathon Project athletes past and present were recognised on a national stage over the weekend, with some more outstanding results recorded right across the country.

In Alice Springs, 2012 New York Marathon squad member Korey Summers took to the track, winning silver medals in the 1500m and 5000m, and taking out his age group.

Korey’s results place him as one of the top distance runners in the Northern Territory, and stand him in good stead for the New York Marathon, now less than three months away.

On Sunday, 2011 New York Marathon runner Nadine Hunt was part of the winning team in the Kuranda to Port Douglas 64km ultra relay, while 2011 team mate Bianca Graham and 2012 squad member Nicky Kerindun put in some great runs to take out third place.

City2Surf done, as runners prepare for Alice Springs

Congratulations to 2012 IMP squad member Nat Heath, who braved tough conditions to run his first Sydney City2Surf race earlier this month, finishing in a quick time of 57 minutes.

Nat said he was pleased to get the tough, hilly course out of the way, after hearing so much about it.

”The course was really good, as I enjoy hilly courses, and it was great to finally experience Heartbreak Hill,” he said.

“I loved how the whole city gets behind the event, with bands playing on the side of the streets, and lots of spectators cheering you on.”

Nat was joined by 2011 IMP squad members, and marathon runners, Nadine Hunt and Tegan Pigram.

A special mention must also go to City2Surf champion Lara Tamsett, who blitzed the field to finish in a time of 46 minutes and 55 seconds. Lara has raised close to $2000 for IMP through our Footprints fundraising campaign.

Indigenous Marathon Project athletes Nat Heath and Amber Parker, both from NSW, will step up this weekend and take on the annual Sydney City2Surf – the world’s largest fun run.

The pair is part of the 11 member Indigenous Marathon Project squad, all vying for a spot on the start line of the famous New York Marathon, now less than three months away.

Both runners achieved outstanding results at the recent Gold Coast half marathon, standing them in good stead for the tough 14km course from Sydney’s Hyde Park to Bondi Beach, alongside 85,000 other competitors.

26 year old Nat, from Newcastle, said he was excited by the challenge of competing in his first City2Surf.

“I have heard from a lot of people how great the event is, and I am looking forward to running alongside four other Indigenous people from where I work, as well as my partner, so it will be fun to all do it together,” he said.

“My preparation for New York is going really well. I am starting to build up and increase the amount of kilometres I run each week, and my body seems to be adapting well, which is very positive.”

Sydney-based elite runner and 2010 City2Surf champion Lara Tamsett, will also line up alongside the IMP team, as part of the IMP Footprints fundraising program. Tamsett, a long-time supporter of the Project, has raised more than $1500 in the lead up to the race*.

These funds go towards helping both past and present IMP athletes to continue to attend training camps and running events, as well as further their education.

2011 IMP team member and Boston Marathon runner Tegan Pigram will also join the team, in her first race since conquering the marathon in April.

The next big challenge for the IMP athletes will be a 30km test event in Alice Springs in September, where each runner will battle it out for a spot in the final team heading to New York.

Position description

The Accounting and Administration Officer will manage the administrative and financial aspects of our office and programs. Selection Criteria

IMP and Maddocks join to tackle Indigenous health

The Indigenous Marathon Project, together with Maddocks, have formally signed a two year alliance, with the firm to provide pro-bono legal, marketing and library services to IMP, following the rapid expansion of the Project over the past 12 months.

The Indigenous Marathon Project, founded in 2010 by former Australian of the Year and World Champion Marathon runner Rob de Castella uses the marathon to change lives and promote the importance of healthy lifestyles.

In the last two years, 17 Indigenous athletes have completed either the New York or Boston Marathon. The Project has also expanded to include the National Deadly Fun Run Series, which is made up of remote and regional community running events.

This year, 11 athletes from remote Indigenous communities across the country are in training for the New York Marathon, to be held in November, as well as undertaking their Certificate IV in Health and Leisure.

De Castella said he was excited for the two organisations to join forces, and continue to change the lives of Indigenous Australians.

“The Project is only going to continue to grow, and joining with Maddocks will allow us to focus on more specific areas of the Project, and put more resources into our runners,” he said.

“This will in turn allow us to continue to give Indigenous Australians a great opportunity to change their lives and reinforce our slogan; if you can run a marathon, you can do anything.” The signing of the alliance took place in the Indigenous Wing of the National Gallery of Australia.

Indigenous runners half way to New York

Indigenous Marathon Project athletes have shown that they are well and truly on the road to New York after achieving some outstanding results at the Gold Coast Airport Running Festival, running alongside nearly 30,000 other runners.

With four athletes taking part in the 10km event on Saturday, and seven tackling the half-marathon on Sunday, some promising times were recorded, with Jurgean Tabuai from Townsville finishing the 10km event in just 41 minutes and Korey Summers from Alice Springs getting through the half marathon in 82 minutes. Amber Parker from Cessnock was the fastest IMP female, finishing the half marathon in 1 hour and 58 minutes.

For most of the athletes, who are part of Rob de Castella’s Indigenous Marathon Project, this was the furthest that they have ever run and the first time they had ever competed in an organised running event.

De Castella said he was extremely proud of what each member of the squad had achieved in such a short space of time, and was excited about what lay ahead for the team.

“To see these runners get out there on only a few months training and do what they have done is truly inspiring, and they should be extremely proud of what they have all achieved,” de Castella said.

“The event really showcased the enormous untapped talent and depth of endurance that Indigenous Australia possesses, and it was amazing to see how happy and proud each person was when they crossed the finish line”.

While on the Gold Coast, the team undertook more components of their Certificate IV in Health and Leisure, and learnt insights and tips from a number of high profile athletes including three time Olympic marathon representative Lee Troop.

The athletes will now head home to some of the most remote areas of the country and continue training. Their next big challenge a 30km test event in Alice Springs in September. IMP runners rise to the challenge and tackle Gold Coast

Eleven Indigenous runners will this week descend on the Gold Coast, ready to tackle the prestigious Gold Coast Airport half marathon and 10km events.

The athletes, many from tiny Indigenous communities scattered across the country, are three months into their training for the New York City Marathon in November as part of Rob de Castella’s Indigenous Marathon Project.

Under the watchful eye of de Castella, and coach Tim Rowe, the athletes will line up with thousands of runners from across the globe to tackle one of the biggest events on the Australian running calendar.

For most, this will be the longest they have ever run, and for many, the first time they have ever competed in an organised running event.

Thirty year old Emma Cameron from Darwin said she was feeling nervous, but excited ahead of the half marathon on Sunday.

“I know it’s going to be really hard and tough, but I am looking forward to the excitement on the day, and the feeling of running across the finish line”, she said.

“Right now, I just want Sunday to come so I can run”.

De Castella said the event was an important step in the athlete’s preparation for New York and was happy with their progress so far.

“These athletes have been given a great opportunity to participate in one of the country’s most well-known running events, and this will no doubt be a highlight in their preparation for New York,” he said.

“These guys are a long way from home and they will be thrown out of their comfort zones, but I am excited to see what each of them can achieve”.

While on the Gold Coast, the athletes will tick off more components of their Certificate IV in Leisure and Health, which they will be able to take back home, and inspire family and friends.

Yirrkala named inaugural Deadly Fun Run champion community

The small community of Yirrkala in Arnhem Land, has been named the 2012 Deadly Fun Run Champion community, following the inaugural Deadly Fun Run Championships, held in Uluru over the weekend.

Runners from five Indigenous communities crossed the finish line on Saturday morning, with runners from the National Indigenous Training Academy also taking part.

The Deadly Fun Run Series, new initiative of Rob De Castella’s Indigenous Marathon Project, aims promote healthy living and increase participation in running in remote Indigenous communities.

De Castella is hopeful that the event will grow to become a major event on the running calendar, with participation increasing annually.

“The enthusiasm shown by every athlete who ran on the weekend was incredible, and if they can take that enthusiasm home and help it grow, then we are going to end up with something really amazing”, he said.

“Communities are already planning their next series of fun runs, and I have no doubt that the level of community participation is going to get bigger and bigger.”

A number of outstanding performances were recorded over the three and five kilometre course, with Yirrkala in the Northern Territory taking out the overall community Championship, closely followed by Yarrabah in Queensland and Kununurra in Western Australia.

The highlight of the day came from youngest competitor seven year old Kaysan Madua from Napranum in Queensland, as she crossed the finish line in fifth place with a great run.

Winning athletes and communities were presented trophies by Indigenous Health Minister, Warren Snowden on Saturday evening overlooking Uluru. While at the Championships, athletes also took part in a guided tour of Uluru and the Sounds of Silence dining experience.

The Deadly Fun Run Series, and Championships were funded by the Indigenous Sport and Recreation Program, and aim to reduce smoking and the consumption of soft drink in Indigenous communities, while promoting healthy living.

IMP Deadly Fun Run Championships take over Uluru

The countdown is on for the inaugural Indigenous Marathon Project Deadly Fun Run Championships!

In just over a week, 26 athletes ranging from ages seven to 56, and representing six Indigenous communities from across the country, will descend on Uluru to take part Australia’s first ever Indigenous running festival held at Uluru.

A number of communities in the surrounding Uluru area will also be involved.

The Deadly Fun Run Series, part of Rob De Castella’s Indigenous Marathon Project, was launched late last year, in a push to promote healthy living, and increase participation in running in remote Indigenous communities where the sport was not previously recognised.

Community Champions from Mossman, Yarrabah and Napranum in Queensland, Tennant Creek and Yirrkala in the Northern Territory, and Kununurra in Western Australia, will be flown in for the three and five kilometre Championships, with representatives selected from a series of four fun run events held in each community over the past six months.

De Castella has high hopes that the event will feature annually on the running calendar, with ambitions of making it a major Indigenous running festivals.

“The Deadly Fun Run Series has been all about communities owning their own fun runs, and highlighting community champions, all while promoting healthy living and community involvement,” De Castella said.

“Running and walking is not currently seen as a sport within many Indigenous communities, and IMP looks to encourage participation through the presentation of medals for all participants.”

With a number of the athletes having never travelled on an aeroplane, participants will be treated to the full Uluru experience including staying at the Voyagers Ayres Rock Resort, taking part in a base tour of Ayres Rock, and a Sounds of Silence dining experience.

Indigenous men put to the test in Canberra

Six Indigenous men, some from the most remote communities in Australia, have survived their first training camp as members of the 2012 IMP New York Marathon squad.

The five day camp held at the AIS saw the men thrown out of their comfort zones, and into the sub-zero temperatures of a Canberra winter.

Each runner showed a great deal of guts and determination, all achieving some major milestones in the lead-up to the New York Marathon in November,

The men were put to the test over a number of challenges, including the beep test, time-trials, starting work on their Certificate III in Community Recreation (Indigenous Healthy Lifestyle), and some great runs over a 16km time-trial.

The men will now return home to take on some solid training before running the Gold Coast half marathon in July.

Brisbane Running Festival 2012

Deek asked us to sign up to Indigenous Marathon Project so that we can look to increase the involvement of Deek with the Brisbane Running Festival 2012. This year we are honouring Deeks’ Commonwealth Games Marathon win in 1982. We are doing this by creating special “Run Like Deek” singlets for all participants as well as other memorabelia. We would love the opportunity to have Deek sign some posters for us as random draw prizes and possibly be available at an official launch in Brisbane City prior to the event. Indigenous men touch down in Canberra

A squad of six Indigenous men will today arrive in Canberra for their first training camp as part of the 2012 Indigenous Marathon Project New York Marathon squad.

Following the success of the women’s camp last week, Korey Summer from Alice Springs, Justin Gaykamangu from Ramingining, Kieren De Santis from Tiwi Islands, Marius Clarke from Gunbalanya, Jurgean Tabuai from Townsville and Nat Heath from Newcastle will be finish the camp one step closer to running the world’s most famous race, the New York Marathon.

Under the guidance of World Champion marathon runner, and former Australian of the Year, Rob de Castella, the men, many from tiny remote communities, will be put through their paces over the intensive five day camp that will include the beep test, elements of the Certificate III in Community Recreation (Indigenous Healthy Lifestyle), and a 16km time trial.

For 19 years old Kieren De Santis, the icy streets of Canberra will be a world away from the remote community of Milikapiti in the Tiwi Islands. Kieren was inspired to apply for the Project to challenge himself, and to become a role model for his community.

“Now that I am in this position, I just have to prove that I can stick with the program and do the training right so that I can get somewhere,” he said.

“This will change my whole world. I have to look for a new challenge instead of doing the same thing over and over.”

The team will take part in a 16km time trial on Friday, putting their training and hard work into practice. This will be the longest that most of the men have ever run.

While in Canberra, the men will also complete elements of their Certificate III in Community Recreation (Indigenous Healthy Living), which will assist them in obtaining employment within the sporting domain.

Indigenous Women Conquer AIS Camp

Five Indigenous women have braved the cold Canberra winter and made it through their first training camp as part of the 2012 IMP New York Marathon squad.

The girls achieved some amazing milestones during their five days in Canberra including smashing the beep test, conquering Mount Ainslie, starting work on their Certificate III in Community Recreation (Indigenous Healthy Lifestyle), and some very gutsy runs in the Mother’s Day Classic 10km.

They also learnt a lot about themselves, their health, and the sport of running. The girls are now back home and training hard, and will come together again in July for the Gold Coast half-marathon.

Leaving behind the comforts of home, the six women will be faced with a number of challenges, including the Canberra winter, as they take a step closer to running the world’s most famous race, the New York Marathon.

Under the guidance of World Champion marathon runner, and former Australian of the Year, Rob de Castella, the women, many from tiny remote communities, will be put through their paces over the intensive four day camp.

For 21 year old Grace Eather, the icy streets of Canberra will be world away from the remote community of Maningrida in the Northern Territory. Grace was inspired to apply for the Project following the success of fellow Maningrida resident Juan Darwin through the Project in 2010.

“Knowing the kind of pressure and adversity that is very apparent in remote community life, I think it is our responsibility as youth to promote health and wellbeing to the younger generation,” she said.

“I want people to see that we are able to make a change in our own communities and have the same opportunities as young people in the cities”.

The team will take part in the 10km run in the Canberra Mother’s Day Classic on Sunday morning, putting their training into practice, and doing their mothers proud. This will be the first opportunity for them to experience the excitement that comes with large running events.

While in Canberra, the athletes will also complete elements of their Certificate III in Community Recreation (Indigenous Healthy Living), which will assist them in obtaining employment within the sporting domain.

Korey Summers

23 years old from Alice Springs Korey has been a talented runner all his like, and prior to joining IMP, have never publically recognised his Indigenous heritage. Korey wanted to be involved in the Project to be a role model and encourage young people in Alice Springs and to make a difference in his community. Korey follows in the footsteps of past IMP athletes from Alice Springs – Charlie Maher and Caleb Hart in 2010 and Reggie Smith in 2011. Korey proved his running talent throughout his time in the Project, finishing the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival half-marathon in September 2012 in a personal best time of 79 minutes. Korey is also the first IMP athlete to win a national medal, picking up two medals at the Northern Territory Athletics Championships in 2012. Following the cancellation of the 2012 New York Marathon due to Hurricane Sandy, Korey continued his training and finished the Tokyo Marathon in February 2013, alongside his IMP team mates, in an IMP marathon record time of 3 hours 8 minutes. He hope to continue with his running, and wants to represent Australia at the Olympic Games.

Justin Gaykamangu

30 years old from Ramingining, East Arnhem Land Justin decided to try out for the Project to set a positive example for his young son, and to do something positive of his community of Ramingining. Justin was already a strong role model in his community and plays a vital role in helping to organise regular sporting activities for the young people in community. Since joining IMP, Justin has been known in Ramingining as the running man, and hopes to one day open a sports store in the community. Justin travelled to New York with the 2012 IMP team before the marathon was cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy. He is continuing his running training, and hopes to run the Melbourne Marathon in November this year.

Jurgean Tabuai

30 years old from Saibai Island Jurgean was the first ever Torres Strait Islander male to be selected into the Project, and to finish a marathon. Jurgean joined the Project to inspire young people in his community to take up running, just as he had. He has always been a strong runner, but has improved his running significantly since joining the Project. After suffering a leg injury earlier in the year, Jurgean returned to run a 40 minute 10km at the Gold Coast Running Festival in July, and went on to finish the 30km Alice Springs test event in 2 hours 34 minutes. Jurgean travelled to New York in November with the 2012 squad, before the marathon was cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy. He continued with his training after returning home, and finished the Tokyo Marathon with the IMP team in February 2013 in a time of 3 hours 27 minutes. Jurgean is currently living in Port Lincoln, and is expecting his first child later in 2013.

Marius Clarke

23 years old from Gunbalanya Marius wanted to be involved in the Project as an inspiration to his family and community, and to represent them in a positive way. His involvement has helped to show young Indigenous men and women in his community that running can make them fit and healthy, and take them to places like New York. Marius was integral in helping set up a Deadly Fun Run Series in Gunbalanya, and managed to get local businesses on board to help support a community barbeque at the end of the run. Marius is heavily involved in AFL, and works full-time for the Clontarf Academy. His running improved significantly since joining the Project, and he finished the 30km Alice Springs test event in September in 2 hours 25 minutes. Marius travelled to New York with the IMP squad in November 2012 before the marathon was cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy. Unfortunately after returning from New York, Marius sustained an injury that stopped him running. He is hoping to start training again soon, and wants to run the Frankfurt Marathon in Germany in October.

Nat Heath

27 years old from Newcastle, NSW Nat decided to apply for the Project as an opportunity for education and health, as well as a way to promote health and wellbeing in Indigenous communities. During his marathon training, Nat became heavily involved with the Newcastle Parkrun series, and has improved his running significantly. Nat travelled to New York with the 2012 IMP team before the marathon was cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy. Nat continued with his marathon training, and finished the Tokyo Marathon with the IMP team in February 2013 in a time of 3 hours 15 minutes. Nat recently moved to Sydney to take up a position with the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME). He is continuing his running training, and is in the process of training for a half-ironman event.

Kieren De Santis

20 years old from Milikapiti, Tiwi Islands Kieren decided to try out for IMP as he could see himself falling into the trap of bad habits, and didn’t want to cut his life short. He also wanted to be a role model for other young people in Milikapiti, and inspire them to be involved in sport and to live a healthy lifestyle. As soon as Kieren joined IMP, he quit smoking, and is continuing to encourage other people in his community to do the same. When Kieren arrived at the first IMP camp in May 2012, he had never run further than 10km, and was still smoking heavily. He managed to run a 16km time trial, and finished with the rest of the squad. Kieren’s involvement in IMP has sparked an interest in running on the Tiwi Islands, and he was integral in setting up the Tiwi Road Runners running club, and launching the Deadly Fun Run Series. Kieren is hoping to continue with his running, and complete a marathon.

22 years old from Cessnock Amber was selected for the Project after unsuccessfully trying out in 2011. She continued with her training throughout the year and made the team in 2012. She wanted to be involved in the Project to reconnect with her Indigenous heritage after admitting that she had previously struggled with her Indigenous identity. Amber studies Social Work at the University of Sydney, and hopes that she can use what she has learned through the Project to help people in her community trapped in the cycle of poverty. Amber is a keen sportswoman and lives with her family in Cessnock.

22 years old from Aurukun, QLD Nicky joined the Project as she wanted to make a difference in her community, and to make people happy through the simple act of running. During her involvement with the Project, Nicky helped to launch a Deadly Fun Run Series in Aurukun, and has improved her running significantly, as well as living a much healthier lifestyle. At the 30km test event in Alice Springs in September 2012, Nicky finished her goal of 21.1km (half-marathon), which was 10km further than she had ever run before. Nicky is planning to move to Wagga Wagga in 2013, where she hopes to join a running group, and continue to improve her running.

22 years old from Maningrida, East Arnhem Land Grace decided to join the Project to challenge herself and to promote health and wellbeing in the younger generation in Maningrida. She is passionate about education, and is studying to be a teacher, while teaching at the primary school in Maningrida. Grace was unable to train in the Maningrida community due to the risk of being attacked by wild dogs. Instead, she had to be driven out of the community and dropped-off, and then run home. During the warmer months, she had to be up each day before the sun rose as once the sun is up, it is too hot to train. Grace wanted to be involved in IMP to follow in the footsteps of 2010 IMP squad member Juan Darwin, who is also from Maningrida. She wanted to do for the women of Maningrida what Juan had done for the men.

Remote Australia represented as 2012 IMP New York Marathon Squad Announced

After a nation-wide search, more than 130 applications and an exhaustive screening process, Rob de Castella and his Indigenous Marathon Project team have selected 12 Indigenous runners to be part of the IMP 2012 New York City Marathon squad.

The project this year targeted regional and remote communities across Australia, with six of the 12 runners representing remote communities such as Aurukun, Maningrida and Ramingining The 2012 squad is:

Under the guidance of the former Australian of the Year and World Champion marathon runner, the six male and six female athletes, ranging from Newcastle to the remote East Arnhem community of Ramingining almost 4000 kilometres apart, will be put through their paces at a number of intensive training camps, leading them a step closer to completing the world’s most famous foot race. “These 12 young Indigenous runners are following in the footsteps of the 15 Indigenous Marathon Project runners before them that have been mentored through the New York Marathon over the past two years,” de Castella said. “They are sending a powerful message to Indigenous Australia and reinforcing our slogan; if you can run a marathon, you can do anything.” The athletes will meet for the first time when the come together in Canberra in May for the first training camp, which will not only include a number of training and fitness sessions, but will see the athletes start units of their Certificate III in Community Recreation (Indigenous Healthy Living). IMP will assist them in obtaining employment within the health and fitness industries. Camps will also be held throughout the year in the Gold Coast, Sydney and Alice Springs, with runners taking part in a range of different fun runs. The final team of 10 to travel to New York will be announced following a 30km test event in September. The Indigenous Marathon Project is not a sports program, but uses running and the New York Marathon to change lives and promote physical activity and healthy living and to address high levels of disease in Indigenous Australia.

IMP Conquers Boston

Two Indigenous Australians have risen to the occasion and conquered the 2012 Boston Marathon.

Tegan Pigram from Derby WA and Jamie Wunungmurra from Yirrkala NT overcame many hurdles to make their way through the tough 42.195 km course.

Despite testing conditions, with a temperature of 31 degrees at the start line, Tegan completed the course in 5 hours and 14 minutes, with Jamie coming in at 6 hours and 7 minutes.

For most, we rarely drive this distance, yet these two athletes turned what one day seemed impossible into a reality, proving to themselves and the rest of the nation that if they can run a marathon, they can achieve anything.

This is an incredible example of the strength, spirit and determination.

The road doesn’t end for the pair, who will now continue to work through elements of their Certificate III in Community Recreation.

The long road to Boston

In less than a week, three Indigenous runners from some of the country’s most remote communities will exchange the vast Australia landscape for the streets of Boston as they tackle the 2012 Boston Marathon.

Kelsey Youngblutt from Palm Island (QLD), Tegan Pigram from Derby (WA) and Jamie Wanungmurra from Yirrkala (NT) began their journey to the start line of the 42 km race in April last year when Rob de Castella and his Indigenous Marathon Project conducted a national tryout tour.

From this, 20 promising runners were selected as part of the 2011 New York Marathon squad, and while these three runners didn’t make it to New York, they have spent countless hour training and preparing for the chance to represent Indigenous Australia in the world’s oldest marathon.

“The journey to the start line for these runners has not been an easy one”, de Castella said. “They have had many obstacles to overcome, but this is a significant achievement for each of them, their families and their communities.”

The three runners each successfully completed a 30 kilometre test run in February as part of the Stromlo 30km Lightning Strike, and along with other IMP squad members, have completed units of competence towards obtaining a Certificate III in Community Recreation and have learnt skills that they can now take back to their communities.

“The runners that we have already seen some through the Indigenous Marathon Project have changed their lives and inspired thousands of Indigenous Australia’s to be more physically active and live a healthier lifestyle,” de Castella said. “I have absolutely no doubt that these runners will do the same.”

The team will travel to Sydney tomorrow for final preparations before flying to Boston on Friday.

Mossman Deadly Fun Run

A Queensland downpour couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the Mossman and surrounding community for the first 2012 Deadly Fun Run held over the weekend. Over 40 runners toed the start line, and a dozen walkers not far behind in the fun run that bought the community together. Participants drove over a 100km’s to be there on event day, with the promise of a free trip to Uluru for the community championships spurring on their attendance.

Mossman’s Indigenous elder Raymond Baucannon led the way by proudly participating and proved that running is accessible to all ages and abilities, including one 79 year old woman who was the eldest competitor. The hilly 3.5K course saw many talented runners in the making with 15 year old Mitchell Brim from Kuranda taking out overall first place, and the 1^st junior boy. With only 2 seconds between them 16 year old Kris Verevis raced home in second place. These two will surely be fighting for the points in the coming fun runs to secure their spot at the Championships in July. Third place and first senior male Alex Bendle finished in 16 minutes 18 seconds.

Lead female and local Mossman woman Julie Salam won convincingly in 20 minutes flat. A special mention must go to 8 year old Erin Brown who was the 2^nd female to cross the line.

Boston Beckons

Three inspiring young Indigenous runners have climbed over Canberra’s harsh Brindabella Mountains to secure their place in the Boston Marathon. Just 2 months out from the popular event, Palm Island’s Kelsey Youngblutt, Yirrkala’s Jamie Wunungmurra and Derby’s Tegan Pigram have proved to themselves and the project that they are ready.

Rob de Castella is extremely proud of their weekend performance in one of Canberra’s toughest running events, the Stromlo 30km Lightning Strike. “They have highlighted their guts and determination by completing this gruelling event, running along fire trails, up and over mountain ranges, and even through creek crossing as high as their thigh” he said. “This is a testament to their training and commitment” he continued “they have come a long way since their last 30km run in October.” “This run is a great lead up and preparation for the tough Boston course which has some big hills including the famous heartbreak hill at 30km’s.” Rob de Castella said.

The Boston Marathon is the oldest continuing marathon on earth, where Charlie Maher ran last year and smashed his New York Marathon time by over 10 minutes. These 3 will be running in his footsteps after he impressed organisers and competitors alike. “I’m really looking forward to these three building on what Charlie did in 2011” Deek said.

The New York City Marathon is one of the toughest and biggest running events in the world, with 48,000 runners and 2.5 million spectators.

We are seeking outstanding Indigenous men and women aged between 18 and 30, that have the commitment and ability to train for this endurance running event. They will be coached and supervised by Australian marathon champion, Rob de Castella, be required to attend a number of training camps around Australia during the year, and undertake a special Cert III in Community Recreation – Indigenous Health.

Applicants should be willing to inspire other Inidgenous men and women, and have an interest in wanting to make a differnece by promoting a healthy lifestyle.
